Spread-a-Bale’s newly launched Side Throw (ST) was among 15 different inventions to recognised at the Royal Highland Show with a RHASS Technical Innovations Award, an influential and prestigious accolade which endorses new ideas that help to support new inventions from agriculture.

Honoured with a certificate of commendation, the ST header provides a new option to introduce to Spread-a-Bale’s existing M portfolio of simple and efficient straw and labour-saving straw spreading machines.

The end mounted ST features one vertical rotor spreading straw to the left or right or forward, with a 0.8m wide spread pattern and 4m to 8m throw. The left or right-hand side discharge is facilitated by the turn of a valve and canopy.

Spread-a-Bale’s managing director, Michael Hughes commented: “We are thrilled to have been recognised by the RHASS and presented with a certificate commendation for our new ST. The new header’s specific design was led by farmers with buildings with narrow access doors and passageways seeking to mechanise straw spreading without the dust generated by a turbine chopper machine. The ST solves the issue being able to negotiate access points from 2m wide by availing discharge of straw to the side.

Technical innovations chief steward, Andrew Rennie, said: “RHASS has an historical reputation for recognising and rewarding excellence. Technical innovation is pivotal to the future of our industry, whether in suitable development, improving the environment, promoting best practice or ensuring operator safety and comfort.

“It is a pleasure to award 15 very different inventions with our Technical Innovations Award and to be able to recognise such brilliant advances which are made in our industry.”
